Aromatherapy Monday: Neroli

Citrus aurantium var. amara or Neroli is distilled from the blossoms of the plant found in Italy. It was discovered in the 17th century and named after Anna Maria de la Tremoille, princess of Nerola.

I chose to profile Neroli this week because it is my favorite aroma in the entire world! It is described mostly as a “sweet, floral citrus aroma”¹ or “sweet, honeyed and somewhat metallic”². To me it is an exotic angelic world in it’s own right, reminding me of past memories of childhood and every pure thing in the universe.

Other than provoking poetry, it is known for the following benefits….

  • calms anxiety, lifts one out of depression
  • balances all skin types
  • increases circulation

Lastly, Neroli blends beautifully with other citrus oils, spices (cinnamon, clove, etc.), resins (myrrh), and Clary Sage.
